How to Get to Kruger National Park

Airlink flies directly from Johannesburg into Skukuza Airport, located right inside the park boundaries. The daily outbound flight leaves OR Tambo at 10:00, and the return departs Skukuza at 13:20. Cape Town also operates a daily service to Skukuza. Since Skukuza serves as the park's administrative headquarters, it has plenty of infrastructure. Once you land, you can pick up a rental car from the Avis desk right at the camp. You skip the 400-kilometer highway drive completely and start game viewing immediately. Remember that gate hours apply if you drive out of the camp.

The standard road route takes the N12 and N4 highways east through Mbombela to reach southern entrances like Malelane or Numbi Gate. This covers roughly 390 to 420 kilometers. For a better view, take the scenic alternative along the R540 and R36 through Dullstroom. You can rent a vehicle directly at OR Tambo. A standard sedan handles the park's tar and gravel tourist roads perfectly. Once inside, strict speed limits apply. You must keep to 50 km/h on tar and 40 km/h on gravel. Speed traps operate regularly, so keep your pace down.

Eastgate Airport in Hoedspruit serves the central section of Kruger. Flying here puts you about 70 kilometers from Orpen Gate. It makes sense if you booked accommodation at central camps like Orpen or Satara, an area famous for large lion prides. Flights arrive daily from both Johannesburg and Cape Town. You need to arrange a lodge transfer or rent a car on arrival to cover the remaining distance. Avis operates a rental desk at the airport. If you hire an open safari vehicle driver, they need a specific permit obtainable at Skukuza.

Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport sits between Nelspruit and White River. From there, a private bus service runs to the Numbi Gate area. The route covers about 40 kilometers and takes roughly an hour and twenty minutes. The company Private Connections operates this shuttle. You have to book with them directly, as SANParks does not handle these reservations. It gets you to the park periphery without needing to drive South African highways yourself. From Numbi, you still need a way to travel between camps, so this works best if you join a tour at the gate.
